Chase Peace Like a Champion
Most champions chase trophies, records, or gold medals. But the writer of Hebrews points us toward two things worth chasing even harder: peace and holiness. And the good news? These are wins that last forever!
What Does This Mean?
The word “strive” means to work hard, to pursue, to go after something with effort. Peace doesn’t just happen on its own – it takes work and intentional choices. And holiness – living set apart for God – isn’t just a rule to follow. The verse tells us it’s the path that leads us to seeing God Himself. These two go together: peace with people, and closeness with God.
Hero Challenge
Identify one area of your life where peace is missing – maybe an ongoing argument, an attitude you carry toward someone, or a habit that pulls you away from God. Make a specific plan to address it this week: one action, one conversation, one decision. Peace doesn’t drift in – you have to go get it!
Did You Know?
The book of Hebrews was written to Jewish believers who were going through serious challenges to their faith and were at risk of giving up. This verse comes in the middle of a section about running the race of faith with endurance. Peace and holiness aren’t just nice extras – they’re described here as essential equipment for every faith-filled runner.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
God wants us to be kind and peaceful with everyone around us. Who is one person you can try to be peaceful with today?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
What does it look like to “strive” for peace? Why do you think it takes effort?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
The verse links peace with others AND holiness before God. Why do you think these two things belong together? Can you really have one without the other?
