Work Was Part of the Plan All Along
Did you know that work isn’t a punishment? A lot of people think work only showed up when Adam and Eve sinned, but Genesis 2:15 tells us something different. Before anything went wrong, before any mistakes were made, God gave people a job: work the garden and keep it. Work is a gift, not a curse – and that changes everything!
What Does Genesis 2:15 Mean?
Genesis 2:15 records that God placed Adam in the garden “to work it and keep it.” Two Hebrew words are key here: abad (to work, till, serve) and shamar (to keep, guard, protect). This is not mindless labor – it is purposeful, caring engagement with creation. And it happens before the Fall, meaning work itself is not a result of sin. God designed humans to be active, creative, productive workers who tend and protect the world around them. When we do our chores, homework, or any task well, we are participating in something built into the very foundation of what it means to be human. Work done faithfully is an act of worship.
Hero Challenge
This week, pick one task you usually rush through or complain about – cleaning your room, doing homework, helping with yard work – and do it with the mindset of Genesis 2:15. Tend it. Keep it. Do it as if you are caring for God’s creation, because in a real sense, you are. Then reflect: does working with purpose feel different from just trying to get it done?
Did You Know?
The Hebrew word abad, translated “work” in Genesis 2:15, is also the word for “worship” and “serve” throughout the Old Testament. This is not a coincidence – in God’s design, work and worship are deeply connected. When we faithfully tend the world God has placed in our care, we are doing something that echoes worship. Every carefully done task, every creative project, every job done with integrity – all of it honors the One who designed us to work.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
God gave Adam a job even in the perfect garden! What jobs do you have at home? How can doing them with a happy heart be a way to thank God?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Work was created before anything went wrong – that means work is good! Why do you think people sometimes feel like work is bad or boring? How can we change our attitude toward the work we have to do?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
The Hebrew word for “work” in Genesis 2:15 is also the word for “worship” – they’re connected. How does knowing that faithful, purposeful work is a form of worship change your attitude toward school, chores, or any responsibilities you have? What would it look like to approach your daily tasks as acts of stewardship and devotion?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord, thank You for the gift of work. Help me to approach every task — even the difficult or boring ones — with faithfulness and purpose. Remind me that when I tend what You've placed in my care, I'm participating in something You designed from the very beginning. Let my work be an act of worship.
