Honor Your Parents – It’s a Superpower Move

Did you know that honoring your parents is so important that God attached a special promise to it? It’s the only commandment in the whole list that comes with a built-in reward – and it’s worth knowing about! This mission explores Ephesians 6:2-3.

What Does Ephesians 6:2-3 Mean?

“Honoring” your parents doesn’t just mean obeying them – it means treating them with respect, speaking kindly to them, and valuing the authority God gave them in your life. Paul is quoting from the Ten Commandments here and reminding kids (and adults!) that this is a really big deal to God. The promise? Things will go well for you, and you’ll have a full, flourishing life. Honoring parents is linked to a life that goes well!

Hero Challenge

This week, find one unexpected way to honor a parent or guardian without being asked. Maybe it’s doing a chore before they remind you, writing them a thank-you note, or genuinely listening when they speak. Notice how it makes them feel – and how it makes YOU feel!

Did You Know?

Paul calls this “the first commandment with a promise” because it’s the first of the Ten Commandments that includes a specific reward attached to it. The original command was given to the Israelites in Exodus 20, but Paul shows that it still applies today. Respecting God-given authority has always been part of a wise, faith-filled life.

Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question

Can you think of three kind things you could do for your mom or dad this week to show them you love and respect them?

Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question

What’s the difference between obeying your parents because you have to and honoring them because you want to? Which one do you think God is asking for?

Ages 10-13: Champion Question

Honoring parents can be harder as you get older and may disagree with them sometimes. How do you honor someone even when you don’t agree with their decision? What does godly respect look like in those moments?

♥ Mission Prayer

God, thank You for the parents and guardians You placed in my life. Help me to honor them with my words, my actions, and my attitude — not just when it's easy, but always. Amen.
