Mission Briefing

Alive When We Were Dead

Two of the greatest words in the Bible are found right here: “But God.” When everything looked completely hopeless, when the story seemed finished – God stepped in with something none of us saw coming! This mission explores Ephesians 2:4-5.

What Does Ephesians 2:4-5 Mean?

Before Jesus, we were spiritually dead – cut off from God because of sin, with no way to fix it ourselves. But Paul says God, who is rich in mercy and great in love, made us alive together with Christ. Not because we fixed ourselves. Not because we tried hard enough. Purely because of His grace – His undeserved, totally free gift of love. We were dead, and He gave us life. That is the most dramatic rescue in all of history.

Hero Challenge

Write the words “But God” on a piece of paper and put it somewhere you will see it this week. Every time you face something that seems impossible – a hard situation, a fear, a problem – say those two words out loud and remember: no situation is too far gone for God to step into with His mercy and love.

Did You Know?

Paul uses the phrase “made us alive together with Christ” – which means our new life is connected to Jesus’s resurrection. When Jesus rose from the dead, He did not just prove that He was alive; He made a way for us to share in that new life too. Our story and His story are tied together forever.

Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question

If you had a plant that looked totally dead and then someone watered it and it came back to life – how amazing would that be? That is kind of what God did for us on the inside!

Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question

God made us alive “by grace” – which means it is a free gift. Why do you think God chose to give this gift freely instead of making us work to earn it?

Ages 10-13: Champion Question

Paul says we were “dead in our trespasses” before God stepped in. That is not a comfortable description – but it makes God’s rescue even more remarkable. How does understanding how lost you truly were help you appreciate God’s mercy more deeply?

♥ Mission Prayer

God, thank You for the two most powerful words: "But God." When I was spiritually lost and dead, You stepped in with mercy and love. Thank You for making me alive through Jesus — not because I deserved it, but because You are rich in mercy. Help me to live like someone who has been given the gift of life. Amen.
