Deuteronomy 15:7-8

26 November 2025 · Hero Mission
If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be.
Deuteronomy 15:7-8

Mission Briefing

Don’t Harden Your Heart – Open Your Hand!

Have you ever seen someone who needed help and felt that pull inside you – the one that wants to help – but then talked yourself out of it? God knows that pull very well. In this verse, He gives His people a direct command: don’t ignore it. Don’t harden your heart. Open your hand! This mission is about keeping your heart soft toward people in need.

What Does This Mean?

God was giving His people instructions on how to treat anyone in their community who fell into poverty. He warned against two responses: a hard heart (not caring) and a shut hand (not helping). Both of those are ways of ignoring the need in front of us. Instead, God commanded an open hand – lending whatever was sufficient for the need, whatever it turned out to be. God’s generosity was meant to flow through His people to one another. A hard heart shuts that flow off; an open hand keeps it going.

Hero Challenge

The next time you notice someone who needs something – whether it’s a lonely classmate, someone in need of food, or a friend who needs encouragement – fight the urge to walk past. Open your hand! Take one small but specific action to help that person this week.

Did You Know?

In ancient Israel, when someone lent to a neighbor in need, they were not supposed to charge interest – unlike banks today! God wanted the community to help each other out of kindness and generosity, not to profit from another person’s hard times. This law was a totally different way of thinking about money than the surrounding nations had.

Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question

God says to open our hand to help people who need it. Can you open your hand right now and say, “God, I want to use my hands to help others”?

Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question

What does it mean to “harden your heart” toward someone? Have you ever felt yourself starting to do that? What helped you change your mind?

Ages 10-13: Champion Question

God commands an open hand, not just good feelings. Why isn’t it enough to feel sorry for someone who is struggling? What does it look like to move from compassion in your heart to action with your hands?

♥ Mission Prayer

God, keep my heart soft toward people who are struggling. Help me to open my hand generously whenever I see a need, just like You open Your hand to me. Amen.
