Mission Briefing
The Highest Heaven and the Deepest Earth
Close your eyes and imagine the biggest thing you can think of – maybe outer space, with billions of stars stretching forever in every direction. Now imagine that ALL of that, and everything beneath your feet to the very center of the earth, belongs to God. Every single bit. That’s what this verse is saying! This mission explores Deuteronomy 10:14.
What Does Deuteronomy 10:14 Mean?
Deuteronomy 10:14 stretches our minds with its vastness. “Heaven and the heaven of heavens” was an ancient way of describing the layered cosmos – the sky, the stars, and everything beyond what humans could see or understand. And then the earth with ALL that is in it – every rock, river, creature, and person. This is Moses speaking to Israel before they enter the Promised Land, reminding them that even the land they were about to receive was not ultimately theirs. It was God’s. They were receiving a gift from the Owner of everything. That perspective keeps us from pride, from greed, and from thinking we built our life all by ourselves.
Hero Challenge
On a clear night this week, go outside and look up at the stars. Try to count them – you won’t get very far! Then whisper this truth: “All of this belongs to God.” Let the size of the sky remind you of how vast and great He is. Then ask yourself: if He owns all of that, what does He want me to do with the small piece He’s placed in my care? Journal or draw your thoughts!
Did You Know?
Ancient Near Eastern cultures often believed that different gods owned different territories – one god for the sky, another for the sea, another for the underworld. Deuteronomy 10:14 was a revolutionary declaration: Israel’s God owns ALL of it. There is no territory outside His domain. This was a powerful message in a world of competing gods – and it’s still a powerful truth today.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
Can you point to something – anything – that does NOT belong to God? (Hint: the answer is nothing! He made and owns everything.) How does that make you feel?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Moses told Israel this before they received the Promised Land. Why do you think it was important to remember God owned the land before they even got there?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
If God owns heaven, earth, and everything in between, how should that change the way we think about our possessions, our talents, and even our time? What does it look like to live as if all of it belongs to Him?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord, You own the highest heaven and the deepest earth — and everything in between. Help me to live with open hands, knowing that all I have comes from You and belongs to You. Grow in me a heart of humility and faithful stewardship over all You have placed in my care.
