Mission Briefing

The Trade That Changed Everything

What if someone gave up all their money, their house, their car, their everything – just so you could have a better life? That sounds like something from a movie, right? But Paul says Jesus actually did something even more radical than that. And it changes everything about how we give. This mission explores 2 Corinthians 8:9.

What Does 2 Corinthians 8:9 Mean?

Jesus was rich in the truest sense – He was God, with all of heaven’s glory, power, and riches. But He became poor by coming to earth as a human being with no permanent home, no armies, no treasury. He did it so that through His poverty – His sacrifice – we could become spiritually rich: forgiven, adopted, filled with God’s Spirit, and heirs of eternal life. Paul uses this as the reason we should give generously to others!

Hero Challenge

Find one way to give generously this week from what you have. It doesn’t have to be money – it could be time, attention, food, a skill, or something you own that someone else needs more. Generosity is one of the clearest ways to reflect what Jesus did for us. Give something away this week that costs you something real.

Did You Know?

Paul wrote this verse as part of a section encouraging the Corinthian church to give generously to a collection for poor believers in Jerusalem. To motivate them, he didn’t give them rules or guilt – he pointed them to Jesus. The ultimate example of giving is Jesus Himself. If He gave up heaven for us, how can we hold tightly to what we have?

Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question

Jesus gave us the most amazing gift by coming to earth for us. What is one thing you could give or share to make someone else happy today?

Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question

Jesus became poor so we could become rich. What do you think the “riches” are that He gave us? Are they money, or something else?

Ages 10-13: Champion Question

Paul appeals to the Corinthians’ generosity not through rules but through the example of Jesus. How does looking at what Jesus gave up change your attitude about sharing what you have?

♥ Mission Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for giving up everything so I could receive the greatest gifts of all. Help me to be a generous giver who reflects Your grace to everyone around me. Amen.
