Mission Briefing

The Greatest Trade Ever Made!

What if someone who had done everything right swapped places with someone who had made every mistake, so that the mistake-maker could go free? That sounds like an amazing story – and it’s exactly what Jesus did for YOU! This mission explores 2 Corinthians 5:21.

What Does 2 Corinthians 5:21 Mean?

Jesus never sinned – He was completely perfect. But on the cross, He took on all our sin, all our mistakes and failures, as if they were His own. And in return, He gives us His righteousness – that means His perfect standing before God. It’s the most extraordinary trade in all of history: our mess for His perfection. Because of Jesus, when God looks at us, He sees His own beloved, forgiven children!

Hero Challenge

Write a thank-you note or draw a picture for Jesus this week – yes, really! Express what it means to you that He took your sin and gave you His righteousness. You can keep it in your Bible or put it somewhere you’ll see it every day as a reminder of the trade He made for you.

Did You Know?

Theologians call what happened at the cross “the great exchange” or “substitutionary atonement” – big words that simply mean Jesus stood in our place. Paul wrote 2 Corinthians to a church that was doubting him and questioning his authority. He reminded them that everything he did was rooted in this one amazing truth: what Christ accomplished on the cross changes everything!

Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question

Jesus took our mistakes so we could be clean and loved by God. Can you say “thank You, Jesus” right now and mean it with your whole heart?

Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question

Jesus had never done anything wrong, yet He was punished so we could go free. Why do you think He was willing to do that for us?

Ages 10-13: Champion Question

2 Corinthians 5:21 says we become “the righteousness of God” in Christ. How should knowing that you are seen as righteous – not because of what you’ve done but because of what Jesus did – shape how you see yourself and how you live each day?

♥ Mission Prayer

Lord Jesus, I can barely wrap my mind around what You did for me — You took my sin and gave me Your righteousness. Thank You from the bottom of my heart. Help me to live every day in the light of that incredible gift.
