What Does 2 Corinthians 5:17 Mean?

Paul says that anyone who is “in Christ” – meaning anyone who has trusted Jesus and walks with Him – is a new creation. Not a slightly improved version of their old self, but something entirely new. The old patterns, the old guilt, the old identity defined by mistakes – it has passed away. God does not just forgive us and leave us the same; He makes us into someone new from the inside out. That is one of the most breathtaking truths in the entire Bible.

Then tear it up and throw it away as a symbol of what Jesus does with the old. On a fresh piece of paper, write who you are now: “I am a new creation in Christ.” Keep that second paper.

Paul is saying that being in Christ is as dramatic as creation itself. When God makes you new in Jesus, it is not a touch-up; it is a Genesis-level event happening in your heart.
