We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.

Mission Briefing

Knocked Down But Not Out

Have you ever seen a superhero get knocked down, get back up, and keep going? Paul describes real-life heroes of faith doing exactly that – hit from every angle but never finished. Four times he says “but not” – and those two little words change everything! This mission explores 2 Corinthians 4:8-9.

What Does 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 Mean?

Paul lists four tough things: affliction (troubles from outside), perplexity (confusion and not knowing what to do), persecution (being mistreated for your faith), and being struck down (literally knocked flat). But each one is followed by a powerful “but not” – not crushed, not in despair, not forsaken, not destroyed. Why? Because God is always with His people. The enemy can knock you down but he can NEVER knock you out when God is in you.

Hero Challenge

Write down the four “but not” statements and put them somewhere you will see them this week: “Not crushed. Not in despair. Not forsaken. Not destroyed.” When something hard hits you, read them out loud. Then ask God to help you get back up – because He has promised you won’t be finished.

Did You Know?

Paul was writing these words from personal experience – he had been shipwrecked three times, beaten with rods, stoned and left for dead, imprisoned multiple times, and faced danger constantly. Yet he kept going. He described his life as carrying around “the death of Jesus” so that “the life of Jesus” could also be shown through him. His weakness on display made God’s strength visible to everyone watching.

Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question

Have you ever fallen down and then gotten back up? Who helped you? How does it feel to know God always helps you get back up?

Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question

Paul lists four hard things but adds “but not” after each one. Which “but not” means the most to you right now, and why?

Ages 10-13: Champion Question

Paul’s strength came from something greater than willpower – it came from God living in him. How is that kind of resilience different from just being tough on your own? What does it look like to rely on God’s strength instead of your own when life knocks you down?

♥ Mission Prayer

God, thank You that I am never crushed, never in despair, never forsaken, and never destroyed because You are with me. When life knocks me down, help me get back up knowing that You haven't finished with me yet. Amen.
