Mission Briefing
The Only Brag That Matters
Have you ever met someone who brags a lot about themselves? Or maybe you’ve been tempted to do it yourself! Paul gives us a totally different kind of bragging – one that actually matters and lasts forever. This mission explores 2 Corinthians 10:17-18.
What Does 2 Corinthians 10:17-18 Mean?
Paul is quoting from the book of Jeremiah: if you’re going to boast about anything, boast about knowing God! Self-promotion – talking yourself up so people think highly of you – doesn’t impress God at all. What matters is whether God commends you. “Commend” means to say “well done, I’m pleased with you.” And you can’t earn that by showing off – you earn it by humbly serving and trusting God.
Hero Challenge
This week, catch yourself before you brag about something you’ve done – and instead, say something that gives credit to God or lifts up another person. Try replacing “I did…” with “God helped me…” or “My friend is amazing at…” Practice pointing attention upward and outward instead of toward yourself.
Did You Know?
Paul was writing to correct people in Corinth who were comparing themselves to each other and boasting about their abilities and accomplishments. It was causing division in the church! He reminded them that the only approval that counts forever is God’s – and God isn’t impressed by our trophies, He’s looking at our hearts.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
Instead of saying “Look what I did!”, what’s something good you could say about God or a friend?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
What’s the difference between being proud of something you did and bragging about it? When does being proud cross into showing off?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Paul says God’s commendation is the only one that truly counts. How would your social media habits, conversations, or competitive choices change if you really believed that God’s “well done” mattered infinitely more than human applause?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord, help me stop trying to impress people and start living for Your approval. Teach me to boast only in knowing You — the greatest treasure in the universe. Let my life point to You, not to myself. Amen.
