Mission Briefing
1 Thessalonians 5:18 doesn’t say “give thanks when things are going well.” It says give thanks “in ALL circumstances” – and that’s a totally different challenge. All circumstances includes the bad day where everything went wrong. It includes the argument you didn’t want to have. It includes the thing you prayed for that didn’t happen the way you hoped. Giving thanks IN those moments doesn’t mean pretending they’re fine. It means deciding to trust that God is still good even when things aren’t.
Here’s why this matters: gratitude changes something in your brain and in your heart. When you look for things to be thankful for – even small ones, even in a hard moment – it shifts your focus from what’s missing to what’s present. Scientists actually say this! And God knew it long before science did. He’s not asking you to be grateful BECAUSE the hard thing is good. He’s asking you to find His goodness even inside the hard thing. Because it’s always there – even if it’s just “I’m still breathing” or “Someone loves me.”
What Does 1 Thessalonians 5:18 Mean?
Gratitude is like a muscle – the more you use it, the stronger it gets. If you practice finding three things to be thankful for every single day (yes, even the bad days), you’ll start to notice God’s goodness showing up in places you never looked before. Gratitude doesn’t make problems disappear. But it makes YOU stronger in the middle of them.
Mission Activity
Start a tiny “thank you” jar. Find a cup or jar and some small strips of paper. Every day this week, write one thing you’re grateful for on a strip and drop it in. On the hardest day of the week, try to write TWO things. At the end of the week, tip them all out and read them. Notice what God has been doing even in the ordinary moments. (Note: the verse above is paraphrased to help younger readers connect with its meaning. The original is 1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV.)
♥ Mission Prayer
Dear God, help me be thankful even on hard days. I know You're still good even when things feel bad. Teach me to find something to be grateful for every single day, no matter what. Amen.
