Don’t Be Surprised When It’s Hard
Have you ever been blindsided by something hard and thought, “Why is this happening to me?” Peter has an answer: don’t be shocked! Hard times are part of the journey – and they connect you to Jesus in a way that leads to incredible joy on the other side. This mission explores 1 Peter 4:12-13.
What Does 1 Peter 4:12-13 Mean?
Peter calls believers “beloved” – deeply loved – right before he talks about fiery trials. That’s important! He’s saying: you are loved AND you will face hard things, and those two truths go together. When you face trials because of your faith, you are actually sharing in what Jesus experienced. And just as Jesus’ suffering led to glory and resurrection, our suffering for His name will lead to rejoicing when His glory is revealed. Hard now, glorious later.
Hero Challenge
Peter says rejoice NOW, insofar as you share in Christ’s sufferings. That’s a choice to make before the reward arrives. This week, if something hard happens because you tried to do the right thing or stand up for your faith, choose to rejoice – even just say out loud: “I’m sharing in something Jesus went through, and that connects me to Him.”
Did You Know?
Peter wrote this letter to believers in Asia Minor who were experiencing real persecution – many were facing serious threats simply for following Jesus. Peter himself had been imprisoned and beaten for his faith before writing this. He was not giving hollow advice; he was writing from experience. The word translated “fiery trial” comes from a Greek word used for smelting metal – burning away impurities to reveal pure gold.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
Have you ever had a hard day? Did you know Jesus had hard days too, and He understands exactly how you feel?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Peter says don’t be surprised by fiery trials – why do you think he doesn’t want believers to be shocked when hard things happen?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
There is a connection in this verse between suffering NOW and rejoicing WHEN Jesus’ glory is revealed. How does having a future hope change the way you experience present hardship?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that when I go through hard things for Your name, I am sharing something with You. Help me not to be surprised or afraid of trials but to rejoice knowing that glory is coming. Amen.
