Your Gift Was Made for Others
Every hero has something special – a power, a skill, a gift that’s uniquely theirs. But here’s the twist: that gift wasn’t just given to make YOUR life better. It was given so you can make SOMEONE ELSE’S life better. That’s what 1 Peter 4:10 is all about!
What Does 1 Peter 4:10 Mean?
First Peter 4:10 makes a clear connection between receiving and serving. The pattern is: each person has received a gift → that gift is to be used to serve one another → we do this as stewards of God’s “varied grace.” The phrase “varied grace” is beautiful – it means God’s grace comes in many different shapes and sizes, distributed differently to each person. Your particular gift is your portion of God’s grace given to you for the sake of others. This turns every ability, skill, and talent into an act of ministry. Whether you’re good at art, encouragement, organizing, music, teaching, or just listening – that gift has a purpose beyond yourself.
Hero Challenge
Identify one gift or strength you have and find a specific person or situation where you can use it to serve this week. Don’t wait for the perfect big moment – look for a small, real need right around you. A younger sibling who needs help. A classmate who is struggling. A neighbor who could use a helping hand. Use your gift on purpose – and notice how it feels when your ability becomes someone else’s blessing.
Did You Know?
Peter wrote his first letter to scattered believers living as “exiles” across the Roman empire – people who had been displaced and were facing real hardship. In that context, he urged them to use their gifts to serve one another. The early church was remarkable precisely because believers took care of each other so well that the surrounding world took notice. The church’s secret weapon was ordinary people using ordinary gifts for each other’s good.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
What is something you are really good at? Can you think of one way to use that gift to help someone in your family or school today?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Peter says our gifts come from God’s “varied grace.” What do you think it means that God gives different gifts to different people on purpose? Why is it good that we don’t all have the same gifts?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
1 Peter 4:10 says we are “stewards” of God’s grace – we don’t own our gifts, we manage them for God. How does that shift in ownership change the way you think about developing your abilities and using them for others?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord, thank You for the gift You've placed inside me. Help me not to keep it to myself, but to offer it freely to the people around me. Make me a faithful steward of Your grace — someone whose abilities become blessings for others, for Your glory.
