Bless, Don’t Blast

When someone says something mean about you, your brain’s first reaction is probably to say something mean back. But Peter says there’s a secret weapon that’s way more powerful than insults – and it comes with a bonus blessing for YOU! This mission explores 1 Peter 3:8-9.

What Does 1 Peter 3:8-9 Mean?

Peter lists five hero qualities: unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, tender heart, and humble mind. These aren’t just nice-sounding words – they’re a battle plan for getting along with people, even hard ones. And instead of hitting back with mean words when someone is cruel, Peter says to BLESS them. Why? Because that’s what you were called to do – and when you bless others, blessings come back to you.

Hero Challenge

This week, catch yourself the moment you want to say something mean back to someone. Instead, say one kind or encouraging word to them – or at least stay silent and say a quick prayer for them. It’s one of the hardest hero moves, but one of the most powerful. Try it at least once and see what happens!

Did You Know?

Peter was writing to faith-filled believers who were being insulted, mocked, and mistreated for their beliefs. He wasn’t just giving fluffy advice – this was real-life survival guidance for people under pressure. And history shows it worked: communities known for their love and forgiveness in hard times stood out so much that people wanted to know more about their faith!

Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question

Instead of saying something mean back, we can choose to say something kind. Can you think of one kind thing to say to someone who isn’t always nice to you?

Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question

Peter says when you bless others instead of insulting them back, you will “obtain a blessing.” What do you think that means?

Ages 10-13: Champion Question

How is responding with blessing instead of insults different from just being a pushover? Is it possible to be kind AND still stand up for yourself?
