1 Peter 2:21-23

19 October 2025 · Hero Mission
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
1 Peter 2:21-23

Mission Briefing

Follow in the Footsteps

When someone hurts you and you want to hurt them back, what stops you? For Jesus, it wasn’t a rule – it was trust. He trusted God so completely that even while being treated unjustly, He stayed calm and gave it to God. Peter says: that’s the path. Follow those footsteps. This mission explores 1 Peter 2:21-23.

What Does 1 Peter 2:21-23 Mean?

Peter reminds us that following Jesus isn’t just about what we believe – it’s about how we respond when life is hard and people are cruel. Jesus never sinned. He never lied. And when He was insulted, He didn’t insult back. When He suffered, He didn’t make threats. How? He kept “entrusting himself to him who judges justly” – He handed it all to God and trusted God to make it right. That’s the model we’re called to follow.

Hero Challenge

Think about a situation where you’ve been treated unfairly and you’re still feeling the anger or hurt. This week, practice “entrusting it to God” – say a prayer specifically giving that situation to God and trusting Him to handle what you can’t. Then make a commitment not to retaliate or keep replaying revenge thoughts. Let God be the judge, and walk free!

Did You Know?

Peter wrote this letter to believers who were scattered across the Roman world and dealing with real persecution – people making fun of them, treating them unfairly, and sometimes worse. Peter knew what it was like to fail at following Jesus’ example (he denied Jesus three times!). So when he says “follow in His steps,” it comes from hard personal experience. He knew this path was possible – and worth it.

Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question

Even when people were mean to Jesus, He didn’t say mean things back. Can you think of a time when it’s hard not to say something mean back? What could you do instead?

Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question

Peter says Jesus “entrusted himself to him who judges justly” – He trusted God to handle things. What does it look like to trust God when someone treats you unfairly?

Ages 10-13: Champion Question

Peter says we are “called” to follow Jesus’ example of suffering without retaliation. That means it’s not optional for a faith-filled life. How do you think a person grows to the point where they can stay calm under pressure like Jesus did?

♥ Mission Prayer

Jesus, You showed us exactly how to handle being treated unfairly — by trusting God and staying true to who You are. Help me to follow in Your footsteps and to trust God to be my defender. Amen.
