Mission Briefing
This Is What Love Really Looks Like
People talk about love all the time – but John says real love is not just a feeling or a word. Real love has a definition, and God wrote it in history with the most incredible act ever recorded! This mission explores 1 John 4:9-10.
What Does 1 John 4:9-10 Mean?
John says love is not us reaching up to God – it is God reaching down to us first. He sent His only Son, Jesus, into our world so that we could have real, lasting life through Him. The word “propitiation” is a big word that means Jesus took the punishment for all our sins, so that nothing stands between us and God anymore. God did not wait for us to love Him first. He loved us first – and proved it by giving the most precious gift He had.
Hero Challenge
Love is not just a feeling – it is an action. This week, choose to do one act of love for someone before they ask, before they notice, and before you get credit for it. Then think about how God loved you in exactly that way – first, freely, and fully.
Did You Know?
The word “manifest” in this verse means something hidden was made visible and clear. God’s love always existed – but when Jesus came to earth, God made that love visible so that everyone could see it, touch it, and experience it. Jesus was love with skin on.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
Has anyone ever given you a really, really special gift? God gave us His Son Jesus – the most special gift ever! How does that make you feel?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
John says love is about God loving us first – not us trying to earn His love. How does knowing that change the way you think about your relationship with God?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Real love, according to 1 John, is sacrifice – giving something precious so someone else can have life. Who in your life might need that kind of sacrificial love from you this week?
