What Does 1 John 4:16 Mean?

John says we can “know and believe” God’s love – meaning it is not just a feeling, it is something we can be totally sure of. When we stay close to God (that is what “abides” means), we are living right inside His love. And when we live in His love, He lives in us too. It is the most amazing exchange: we give Him our hearts, and He fills us with love that never runs out.

Every morning this week, say out loud: “God is love, and I am living in His love today.” Then look for one way His love shows up during your day – in a kind person, a beautiful moment, or a feeling of peace – and thank Him for it at bedtime.

John wrote 1 John late in his life when he was very old. He had walked with Jesus, seen the miracles, and lived a long faith-filled life. Of everything he could write about, he kept coming back to one theme: love. He mentions love over 40 times in this short letter – because he had learned that everything else flows from this one truth.
