What Does 1 John 3:1 Mean?

The phrase “see what kind of love” in the original language means “look at this unusual, extraordinary, out-of-this-world love!” God’s love is so lavish and so great that it actually makes us into His children – not just in name, but for real. John adds “and so we are” as if to say, “No, seriously, this is actually true!” It is not pretend. You really are God’s beloved child.

John is often called “the apostle of love” because he wrote more about God’s love than almost any other Bible writer. He was the disciple who described himself as “the one Jesus loved” – not because he was the best, but because God’s love had become the most important thing in his life. He wanted everyone to experience that same love!
