A Reminder When You Eat
What’s your favorite meal? Pizza? Tacos? Mac and cheese? Did you know that every single ingredient in that meal – from the grain in the crust to the tomatoes in the sauce – came from an earth that belongs entirely to God? Your next meal is a chance to remember something amazing about Him! This mission explores 1 Corinthians 10:26.
What Does 1 Corinthians 10:26 Mean?
Paul quotes Psalm 24:1 in 1 Corinthians 10:26 to answer a practical question: is it okay to eat food that was previously offered to idols at a pagan market? His answer is grounded in a beautiful truth – the earth and everything in it belongs to God. The food itself is not tainted because it all comes from the Lord’s creation. This verse is a call to gratitude: everything we receive, including every meal we eat, is ultimately a gift from the Creator who owns it all. When we understand that, eating becomes an act of worship. Every bite is a reason to say thank You.
Hero Challenge
For the next three days, pause before every meal – not just dinner, but breakfast and lunch too – and actually think about where the food came from. The sun that grew it, the rain that watered it, the hands that prepared it, and the God who made it all possible. Then say a real, from-the-heart thank you prayer before you eat. Watch how gratitude changes the taste of even ordinary food!
Did You Know?
In ancient Corinth, much of the meat sold in the marketplace had first been offered in pagan temple rituals. This caused real debates among early believers about what they could or couldn’t eat. Paul used this moment to point people back to something foundational: God made all of this. The origin of our food in God’s good creation gives us a reason to receive it with gratitude rather than anxiety.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
Where does your food really come from? (Think past the grocery store!) Who made the sun, rain, and soil that helped it grow?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
Paul said knowing the earth belongs to God should make us grateful for what we eat. How does being thankful change the way you feel about a meal – even one you don’t love?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Paul used a deep theological truth – God’s ownership of creation – to answer a very practical everyday question. How can you bring that same connection between big truths and small daily moments into your own life? What other everyday things could become reminders of God’s ownership and goodness?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord, thank You for every meal on my table and every ingredient that came from the earth You made. Help me to eat with gratitude, remembering that it all comes from Your hand. May my daily meals be a moment to celebrate Your goodness and provision.
