True Friends Show Up When It’s Hard
It’s easy to be a great friend when everything is fun and going well. But what happens when things get tough? That’s when you find out who your real friends are – and what kind of friend YOU are! This mission explores Proverbs 17:17.
What Does Proverbs 17:17 Mean?
Solomon – the wisest man who ever lived – wrote that a real friend loves you ALL the time, not just when it’s convenient. “Adversity” means hard times, like when someone is sick, sad, or going through something painful. A true friend and a loyal family member show up exactly at those moments. They don’t disappear when things get hard – they come closer.
Hero Challenge
Think of someone who is going through a hard time right now – maybe they’re sad, struggling at school, or feeling left out. Do one brave thing this week to show up for them: sit with them at lunch, text them to check in, or pray for them and let them know you did.
Did You Know?
Proverbs is one of the books in the Bible called “wisdom literature.” King Solomon wrote most of it, and he had seen thousands of friendships throughout his life as king of Israel. When he said this about friendship, he was writing from real-world experience watching people stand by each other – or not – during hard times.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
Would you stay friends with someone even if they were having a really bad day? What would you do to help them feel better?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
What’s the difference between a friend who is only there during the good times and a true friend? Have you ever experienced a true friend showing up for you?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
Sometimes being a loyal friend when someone is going through something hard is uncomfortable. Why do you think Solomon says we are “born for” those hard moments? What does that say about your purpose as a friend?
♥ Mission Prayer
Lord, help me to be the kind of friend who loves at all times — not just when it's easy or fun. Give me eyes to see when someone needs me to show up, and give me the courage to actually do it. Thank You for being the most loyal friend I will ever have. Amen.
