Mission Briefing
Be Strong and Courageous!
Joshua had just been handed the biggest job of his life: lead an entire nation into a land full of unknown dangers. That would make anyone nervous! But before Joshua could even take his first step, God spoke directly to him with three powerful words – and they are just as powerful for you today. This mission explores Joshua 1:9.
What Does Joshua 1:9 Mean?
God said “be strong and courageous” not once but multiple times to Joshua – because He knew Joshua really needed to hear it. Notice that God did not say “don’t be scared because nothing scary is coming.” He said “don’t be frightened” because the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. The reason for courage is not a lack of danger. It is the presence of God. With God beside you, you can face anything.
Hero Challenge
Is there something brave you have been putting off – a conversation, a new challenge, saying yes to something that scares you a little? This week, take that step. Before you do, say Joshua 1:9 out loud and remember that God goes with you wherever you go. You are not going alone.
Did You Know?
God told Joshua to be strong and courageous three times in just the first chapter of the book of Joshua. That is not an accident – repetition in the Bible is a signal that something is extremely important. God wanted it deep in Joshua’s heart before the hard journey began. The same God who was with Joshua is with you right now, on your journey too.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
What does God tell Joshua not to feel in this verse?
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
God told Joshua to be strong and courageous, but he was probably still nervous. What is the difference between feeling scared and being courageous?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
The promise “I am with you wherever you go” is the foundation of Joshua’s courage. How does the presence of God – not the absence of problems – change the way you approach scary or hard situations in your life?
♥ Mission Prayer
God, thank You for being with me wherever I go. Help me to be strong and courageous today — not because everything is easy, but because I know You are right there beside me every step of the way. Amen.
