Mission Briefing
Acts 1:8 is Jesus’ final promise and final instruction wrapped in one: when the Holy Spirit comes on you, you’ll receive power – and you’ll be His witnesses, starting in your own backyard and reaching all the way to the ends of the earth. The disciples were scared and confused after the crucifixion. They weren’t ready to tell the world anything. And Jesus knew that. So He didn’t just say “go” – He said “wait for power first.” The Holy Spirit is that power.
A witness is someone who tells what they’ve seen and experienced. You don’t have to be an expert. You don’t have to have a theology degree. A witness just says: “This is what I know. This is what happened to me. This is who God is in my life.” That’s it. And the Holy Spirit gives you the confidence, the words, and the timing to do it well. You’re not doing this by yourself. You have backup that doesn’t get tired or scared.
What Does Acts 1:8 Mean?
The same Holy Spirit who gave the disciples courage to speak to thousands is available to you – in your classroom, in your friendships, in your family. You don’t have to manufacture bravery. You just have to stay close to God and ask Him to fill you up. When the moment comes to speak up about your faith, you’ll find the words there. Not because you’re impressive, but because the Spirit in you is. Start in Jerusalem – the people right around you – and trust God with the rest.
Mission Activity
Write your own short “witness statement” – three sentences max. Answer these: What do I know about God? What has He done for me? What do I want others to know? Practice saying it out loud until it sounds natural, like you’re just talking to a friend. Then this week, find one moment to share it with someone. It doesn’t have to be formal – just real. (Note: the verse above is paraphrased to help younger readers connect with its meaning. The original is Acts 1:8 NIV.)
♥ Mission Prayer
Dear God, thank You that I don't have to be brave on my own. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and give me the power to be a witness — to talk about You naturally and honestly wherever I go. I want to be part of Your story. Amen.
