Real Love Gives Everything
What is the biggest thing someone has ever done for you out of love? Jesus did the biggest thing of all – He gave His whole life. And that is how He defines what real love actually looks like.
What Does This Mean?
John says that the cross – where Jesus gave His life – is the clearest definition of love we will ever see. Love is not just warm feelings or kind words. Real love is willing to give up something that costs you something for the good of someone else. John challenges us: if Jesus laid down His life for us, then we should be willing to lay down our comfort, our time, and our pride for others.
Hero Challenge
Laying down your life does not have to mean something dramatic. This week, find one moment each day to give up something you want – your turn, your seat, your free time – for someone else’s benefit. That is real, Jesus-shaped love in action.
Did You Know?
This verse in 1 John 3 is sometimes called “the other John 3:16.” John 3:16 in the Gospels says God so loved the world that He gave His Son, while 1 John 3:16 says we know love because He gave His life – and we should do the same for each other. Together they form the full picture of love: received from God, then given to others.
Ages 4-6: Little Hero Question
Can you think of a time you shared something you really wanted to keep? How did that feel? That is a little bit like what Jesus did for us!
Ages 7-9: Growing Hero Question
John says we know what love is because of what Jesus did. Why do you think it takes looking at Jesus to understand real love?
Ages 10-13: Champion Question
1 John 3:16 says we “ought to” lay down our lives for others. How does that challenge the way our culture usually defines love as a feeling? What would it look like to practice this kind of love at school or at home?
♥ Mission Prayer
Jesus, thank You for showing me what real love looks like by giving everything for me. Help me not to keep love just as a feeling in my heart, but to show it by giving up things for others. Teach me to love the way You love. Amen.
